N-Fab RKR Step System – Heavy-Duty Rock Sliders with Integrated Steps

★★★★★4.8/5· thousands of reviews

The N-Fab RKR Step System delivers full-length rock slider protection with integrated step pads engineered for daily driver convenience. Built from 3-inch diameter steel tubing, the RKR runs the full rocker length to shield vulnerable pinch welds and cab corners from trail debris, ledge strikes, and side impacts.

Each system includes molded step pads positioned at cab entry points, giving you a stable platform when climbing into lifted trucks without sacrificing underbody clearance. We manufacture every RKR with direct bolt-on brackets matched to your vehicle’s frame rails—no drilling or cutting required for installation.

The textured black powder coat finish resists chipping and corrosion in mud, salt, and trail conditions. The 3-inch tubing diameter provides structural strength under side load while maintaining a low profile that doesn’t extend beyond factory rocker width on most applications.

Steel Construction & Tubing Specifications

Steel Construction & Tubing Specifications

We build every RKR step system from 3-inch diameter DOM (drawn-over-mandrel) steel tubing. This manufacturing process creates seamless tube walls with uniform thickness, eliminating the weak points found in welded-seam construction.

The tubing wall thickness varies by vehicle platform to balance impact resistance with total weight. Light-duty applications use .120-inch walls, while heavy-duty three-quarter-ton and one-ton platforms receive .188-inch walls for increased side-impact protection. Each end cap is TIG-welded and ground flush to prevent mud and debris accumulation inside the tube.

Step Pad Placement & Grip Surface

Step Pad Placement & Grip Surface

Each RKR system includes two molded step pads positioned at the front and rear door entry points. The pads measure 7 inches wide by 10 inches long, providing stable foot placement when entering or exiting the cab.

We mold the step pads from a UV-resistant polymer compound with a raised tread pattern that channels water and mud away from the contact surface. The tread lugs measure .25 inches tall and run in a cross-hatch pattern for multi-directional grip. The pads mount to the top surface of the main tube with stainless steel fasteners that sit below the tread surface to prevent snags.

Installation Requirements & Hardware

Installation Requirements & Hardware

The RKR step system ships as a complete bolt-on kit with vehicle-specific brackets, all mounting hardware, and illustrated instructions. Installation requires basic hand tools: 13mm, 15mm, and 18mm sockets, a torque wrench, and a floor jack to support the assembly during fitment.

Most installations complete in 60-90 minutes per side. The process involves positioning the bracket assemblies against the frame rail mounting points, threading bolts finger-tight, sliding the main tube assembly onto the brackets, leveling the system with a straight edge, then torquing all fasteners to specification.

Perfect balance of protection and function
I wanted rock protection but still needed a step for my wife to get in easily. The RKR does both without looking like I bolted two different products together. The step pads have great grip even when wet, and the whole system feels tank-solid.

Install was straightforward on my F-250
Took me about two hours working alone in the driveway. Everything lined up perfectly with the frame holes, and the brackets have enough adjustment to get it level. The textured black finish matches my wheel wells exactly.

Holds up to serious trail use
I’ve smacked these on rocks in Moab twice now, and they just shrugged it off. One good hit left a dent in the tube but didn’t crack the powder coat. The step pads still look new after six months of muddy boots.

Great product, wish the pads were slightly wider
The protection and build quality are excellent. My only minor complaint is that the step pads could be an inch wider for guys with bigger boots, but it’s not a dealbreaker. Still way better than my old generic nerf bars.

Clean look with real functionality
I like that these don’t stick out past the rocker line on my Silverado. They follow the body contour and don’t catch on trail obstacles the way my buddy’s wider steps do. The step pads are positioned right where you naturally step.

Solved my clearance and access problem
After lifting my truck four inches, I needed something that helped with entry but didn’t kill my breakover angle. The RKR runs high enough that I haven’t scraped once, and the steps make climbing in way easier than grabbing the door frame.

Common Questions About the RKR Step System

Yes, the RKR is compatible with aftermarket suspension lifts. The system mounts directly to your frame rails, so it rises proportionally with your suspension height. On lifts exceeding 4 inches, verify tire-to-tube clearance at full compression to ensure the tire doesn’t contact the main tube during wheel travel. Most lifted applications provide 2-3 inches of clearance.

Each step pad is load-tested to support 300 pounds of static weight. The 3-inch main tube and reinforced mounting brackets distribute stepping force across multiple frame attachment points. During testing, we verify structural integrity under repeated dynamic loading that simulates years of entry and exit cycles.

Yes, the RKR uses vehicle-specific bolt-on brackets that attach to existing frame rail holes. No drilling, cutting, or permanent modification is required. The system installs with hand tools and reverses completely if you remove it later. Installation typically takes 60-90 minutes per side.

The two-stage powder coat process creates a durable finish that resists chipping under normal trail use. Rock strikes may leave surface marks, but the zinc-phosphate pre-treatment underneath prevents corrosion from spreading. The textured surface hides minor scratches better than gloss finishes. We include a five-year warranty against peeling, flaking, or blistering.

The RKR combines full-length rock slider protection with integrated molded step pads at cab entry points. Standard rock sliders provide the same 3-inch tube protection but omit the step pads for a cleaner profile. Choose the RKR if you want easy cab access with your protection, or choose standard sliders if you prefer stepping on the tire or using the door sill.

You must remove factory running boards before installing the RKR—the systems occupy the same mounting locations. Most factory mud flaps remain compatible, though some extended-length aftermarket flaps may contact the main tube during suspension articulation. The RKR mounts 2-3 inches outboard of the rocker panel to provide clearance for standard flap installations.

Spray the step pads with a pressure washer after muddy trips to clear debris from the tread pattern. The raised lugs channel water away from the contact surface naturally. Avoid treating the pads with tire shine or similar petroleum products—these create a slippery film. The UV-resistant polymer maintains grip for years without additional coatings or treatments.
